widespread tension and protests in Ikom and Boki communities as desperate moves to impose Mr. Chris Agibe as consensus candidate for the federal house in the Central senatorial zone of CRS.
Source reveals that a People Democratic Party (PDP) order, with Mr. Gershom Bassey mostly had concluded arrangements to come up with a generally accepted candidate in far away Ikom/Boki Federal constituency.
Mr. Gershom and some stalwarts behind the plot had discreetly ordered, other House of Representatives aspirants to step down for their preferred choice, CREyes investigation reveals further.
The development has led some internal wrangling, and open protests by some youths and elders of Ikom and Boki communities who felt the purported consensus or zoning is being applied to marginalize them. Protesting against the moves to discreetly foist a consensus candidate on the constituency, some of the party elders and stakeholders said it would be foolhardy at this critical time for anybody to think of adopting a candidate when the party is undergoing series of crisis.
The stakeholders under the aegis of Ikom/ Boki Concerned Citizens are piqued at moves by subterranean moves by a top PDP stalwart from the Southern senatorial zone to impose a candidate in Central instead of concentrating at his area, threatening to dump the ruling party candidate for a rival opposition candidate.
The spokesperson of the group, Mr. Akor Ntol, told CREyes in an interview in Ikom that the move amounts to gross mischief and attempts to scuttle the democratic processes put in place by the party for the emergence of credible and acceptable candidates across board. Ntol frowned at the behind-the-scene moves to summon a meeting where aspirants would be forced to come up with a communiqué adopting one of the preferred candidates against the interest of the people.
He said already the leadership of PDP had resolved that where it is difficult to reach a consensus, all cleared aspirants should be allowed to go for the primaries. In the last couple of weeks the ruling party in Cross River has been faced with crisis arising from the November 1, Wards delegates' election congress.
