widespread tension and protests in Ikom and Boki communities

Posted By: betadvicetips - 2:30 PM
widespread tension and protests in Ikom and Boki communities as desperate moves to impose Mr. Chris Agibe as consensus candidate for the federal house in the Central senatorial zone of CRS.
Source reveals that a People Democratic Party (PDP) order, with Mr. Gershom Bassey mostly had concluded arrangements to come up with a generally accepted candidate in far away Ikom/Boki Federal constituency.
Mr. Gershom and some stalwarts behind the plot had discreetly ordered, other House of Representatives aspirants to step down for their preferred choice, CREyes investigation reveals further.
The development has led some internal wrangling, and open protests by some youths and elders of Ikom and Boki communities who felt the purported consensus or zoning is being applied to marginalize them. Protesting against the moves to discreetly foist a consensus candidate on the constituency, some of the party elders and stakeholders said it would be foolhardy at this critical time for anybody to think of adopting a candidate when the party is undergoing series of crisis.
The stakeholders under the aegis of Ikom/ Boki Concerned Citizens are piqued at moves by subterranean moves by a top PDP stalwart from the Southern senatorial zone to impose a candidate in Central instead of concentrating at his area, threatening to dump the ruling party candidate for a rival opposition candidate.
The spokesperson of the group, Mr. Akor Ntol, told CREyes in an interview in Ikom that the move amounts to gross mischief and attempts to scuttle the democratic processes put in place by the party for the emergence of credible and acceptable candidates across board. Ntol frowned at the behind-the-scene moves to summon a meeting where aspirants would be forced to come up with a communiqué adopting one of the preferred candidates against the interest of the people.
He said already the leadership of PDP had resolved that where it is difficult to reach a consensus, all cleared aspirants should be allowed to go for the primaries. In the last couple of weeks the ruling party in Cross River has been faced with crisis arising from the November 1, Wards delegates' election congress.

Cross River!!! PDP can’t afford to have cracks, says minister

Posted By: betadvicetips - 4:34 PM
Chief Edem Duke, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation, has said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State could not afford to have any crack with the coming 2015 general elections around the corner.

Chief Edem Duke called on the party to sort out its differences to avoid being torn apart.
Duke, who said this in Calabar on Sunday, said the state was the last bastion of stability of the party in the country. He said the economic and social challenges facing the state was one that needed the input of all, adding that attention should be focused on tackling it.
The minister said, "We have gone into a season of high political activities and it is important for me especially as a minister especially with a responsibility for national orientation to make an urgent and passionate call on all members in the political space that it is critical for us to maintain a high sense of decorum in this political season. "Cross River State has always being the last bastion of stability in the PDP family all over the country.
Therefore as we begin to go into the active seasons of the elections, I wish to use the opportunity of strengthen the call of the president that we must play politics without bitterness. "It has never been the character of Cross River politics for violence and unethical utterances or for such huge accentuation of the threat to social peace, stability of the society and harmony within the party in the state. "We cannot afford at this critical time when we are facing the challenges of economic and social development, dwindling resources and all kinds of deficiencies. "We cannot allow a crack in the PDP family. It is right and appropriate for each and every one of us to aspire to leadership, but from what I have always seen in the state, we have always at the end of the day resolved out differences in harmony."

PHOTO !!! LECTURER STAB A 300 LEVEL COMPUTER SCIENCE STUDENT IN THE EYE......

Posted By: betadvicetips - 5:59 PM

A student in the University of Calabar, of Computer Science Department (name withheld) almost lost his sight after a lecturer name, Chris Otu in the Department of Economics, in the University of Calabar stabbed him with his car key.

According to #voiceofcalabar source Mr Otu was supposed to have a class with 300 levels students of Computer Science Department by 10.am, today 21 Nov. but he didn't show up due to one reason or the other, so after he kept the students waiting for 2 hours, he later came by 12-noon. so the students assembled themselves at the lecture venue (New CES building room 7) behind Unical Library.

The victimized student who is the lecturer's class rep, took white board markers to the lecturer. But the lecturer for no reason premeditatedly used a book in his hand to hit the student on his head and as if that was not enough, he stabbed him with his car key and walked him out of the class.

The injury was bleeding profusely when the lecturer who felt zero remorse told the injured student and other students in the class to go and ask around who he is.

Mr Chris Otu who lost one of his eyes during a battle, is believed to be an ex-cultist and because this is Nigeria, he claims nothing can be done to him.

Now, they decided to take the case to the media. Hope the university authority will look into this.

THE BATTLE FOR THE SEAT OF VICE CHANCELLOR IN UNIVERSITY OF CALABAR: WHO DOES THE CAP FIT?

Posted By: betadvicetips - 3:58 PM
The position of the vice chancellor of the University of Calabar is gradually folding arms to pave way for another to take his or her turn. In less than 6 months from now, the incumbent Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. James Epoke will hold sway and return back to the medical laboratory science department where he hails from as lecturer. Epoke's years in office as the vice chancellor of the institution is said to have witnessed a lot of achievements and developments both academically and in the area of infrastructures including the CES building recently commissioned by Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the digital conduct of elections in school and the students online portal are all the landmark achievements by the current VC, Prof. Epoke's administration.
With these aforementioned achievements recorded by Epoke's administration, however, one, most especially students of that era, will not easily forget the August 2011 mayhem that resulted in the purported students riot that damaged millions of both the students and the university properties. On who wears the cap next after Epoke of, we cannot anymore pretend of many a persons eying the adorable position of the university, which is said to be zoned this time to the northern of Cross River, as the previous vice chancellors are said to have emerged from the south and central respectively. Some of the men who are said to be in dire need of the number one seat of the institution, topmost among them nclude the current dean of the Faculty of Arts and a one time Commissioner of Education of Cross river, Prof. Zana Akpagu, the person mostly viewed as the most likely persons to succeed Epoke. Also, on the other hand of the show of interest is the former dean if Graduate School, Prof. Bussing with the present Cross River Commissioner of Education, Prof.Offiong Offiong also unalloyed with his indication of interest for the same very much embattled seat.
The dean of the Faculty of Social Science, Prof. Aniah is also not asleep with his flinching taste for the same seat; while unconfirmed rumour has it that the immediate past dean of Allied Medical Science, Prof.(Mrs)Ann Asuquo prowls for the position.
If the rumour about Ann Asuquo is anything to come by then she will be the only eagle eyed woman in the race. Among these well heated contenders, WHO WILL THE CAP FIT?

PDP Cancels Oyo, C- River, Lagos Congresses

Posted By: betadvicetips - 3:49 PM
NATIONAL leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP yesterday bowed to pressure following complaints from some elders, stakeholders, and leaders of the party and cancelled the ward congresses earlier conducted in Lagos, Cross River and Oyo states.

Confirming the cancellation to Vanguard, yesterday, the party's National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, explained that it became imperative to conduct fresh congresses in the three states because they were not well conducted. Following complaints arising, the PDP also on November 8 conducted the local government congresses from the 774 local government councils for the nomination of national delegates to the National Convention slated for December 10/11.
Since the conduct of the congresses, aggrieved members, including governors, stakeholders and leaders have besieged the Wadata Plaza, National Secretariat of the party, with series of complaints of either being short-changed or cases of delegate lists being doctored to favour some against others. Different factions of PDP came up and openly disputed the outcome of the congresses as announced by the various electoral officers assigned to conduct the exercise in some states. However, few other states were without controversies. In Oyo State, the three leading governorship aspirants laid claim to victory, just as the leading aspirants, former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala, Senator Teslim Folarin and Mr Seyi Makinde all claimed to have won the congress. In Cross River State, the fight is between the Senate Leader, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, his group and that of Hon. John Owan Enoh and his supporters.

Chairman: Dissolution of Cross River PDP Exco Impossible

Posted By: betadvicetips - 11:21 AM
By Bassey Inyang In Calabar
As the crisis rocking the Cross River State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lingers, the party Chairman, Ntufam John Okon, has stated that it is impossible for the state executive committee of the party to be dissolved.
Okon who said this against the backdrop of speculation within the political circles that the state executive committee of the party had been dissolved, said those peddling the rumour were only dreaming.
The state party chairman who spoke with journalists at the weekend at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport, shortly after he and other party members returned from Abuja, said: "I was at the PDP headquarters yesterday (on Friday) with the National Organising Secretary, as well as my secretary who is here with me, so, we are all complete, none of my chapter members have been tempered with. It is a wild dream, it is just a wild dream to think that you can dissolve our executive committee, it is a wild dream; it is not possible... " As the chairman of the state party, the issue of suspension and all other things are not true. You can see, I am still coming back to office." Okon stated that the leadership of the PDP enjoyed cordial working relationship with the national leadership of the PDP and President Goodluck Jonathan.
Insisting that the ward congresses were manipulated, he said: "I don't think we are in any abnormal crisis. This is the period of nomination and various interests have to be balanced and those kinds of issues have to be represented. "One thing I want to assure you of is that there was fraud and by God's grace, it has been discovered that there was fraud and that is why we travelled to Abuja and so on.
So, it is very obvious there was fraud. "What we are saying is that we cannot do nomination in the wards and some people go to Abuja to change it. It is not going to be acceptable in this state, and we have told the national leadership that. That is all what I can tell you. "We had to sort out things in Abuja, and that is what I can tell you. We cannot do elections here in the state and people stay in Abuja and change it. You cannot come to the state here and do that. You know we are on ground.
That is the truth." The chairman, who indicated that it is possible to reunite the feuding PDP members in the state, however stated that peace can only return to the party if what he described as the fraudulent acts that trailed the wards congresses led on November 1 were rectified. He stated that even in the current state of disagreements among members, the leadership of the party remained very much in control of its affairs. "We will come back together, but in justice and fair play. We will come back together but not on fraud, not on blackmail. People cannot come and buy us, we are not a commodity, PDP will survive, I can assure you, and nobody can buy us." Speaking on the mission of the party leadership to Abuja, where they stayed for about one week, Okon said: "We have presented our facts.
The hope is that we are standing by the truth and all of us in the wards know who were elected. What we are saying is that we were elected and nobody can fraudulently change that. We will maintain that."

1 year after!!! Another Asuu strike!!!

Posted By: betadvicetips - 8:42 AM

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may yet embark on another very long strike just a year after they called off their 5- month long strike, following the Federal Government not been able to honour the agreement it reached with the lecturers in the previous 5 month strike.

Speaking yesterday at a press briefing in remembrance of the death of former ASUU leader, Prof Festus Iyayi by the convoy of Kogi State Governor, Captain Idris Wada, ASUU lamented the failure of the Federal Government to fulfill its promises. The union disclosed that no government-owned university had received a dime from the N200 billion the government said it had set aside for the revitalization of university education in the current year.

Chairman, Nnamdi Azikiwe University branch of ASUU, Comrade Dennis Aribidor said: "It seems Iyayi's death opened the pandora box that suggests that ASUU's relationship with government might seem irreconcilably hostile. While he fought for a just cause, ASUU is presently skeptical that he died in vain especially since the contention over honouring the ASUU-FG 2009 agreement, which cut his life short, is still far- fetched.

This position is based on some hard truths." Details on AIT Online Share

INTERVIEW !!! How We Conducted The Ward Congress In Cross River And The N500million Bribe...

Posted By: betadvicetips - 9:13 AM

A member of the panel which conducted the November 1 ward congresses (Senator Emma Anosike, ) in Cross River State reveals in this interview with Saturday Sun what occur during and after the poll. He also, dismisses allegations of a five hundred million naira bribe allegation by  Mr. Godwin Etta the state PDP Secretary.
You were part of the electoral panel that conducted the ward congresses in Cross River State on November 1. Reports now indicate that your panel was actually compromised. What really happened?
“I refused initially to talk on this issue but after the outing of the Cross River State Secretary on Kaakaki on AIT, I decided I had to speak to clear my name because he did mention my name. Before that day, I had got a lot of calls to speak on the matter but I refused.

First of all, the convention of our party, the PDP, is that immediately you get to a state, you pay a courtesy call on the governor. When we got to Cross River, we duly paid a courtesy call on the governor, interacted with him, and so on.
Personally, as a politician, I asked the governor, ‘Sir, I hope there’s no problem here, I hope there’s no interest anywhere?’ He replied me that there’s no problem whatsoever but that he wanted the law and the rule of PDP to prevail! I then asked further; ‘in what area?’ He, then, told me that, ‘yes, based on the PDP arrangement, some forms were returned late.’ I then said no, the instruction of our coming to Cross River State was that anybody who bought the nomination form, irrespective of the place you got the form from, whether it was bought in Cross River or you got the form in Abuja, you are entitled to contest.
The party told us not to entertain any reason whatsoever; that any aspirant should be allowed to contest; that we should collect forms, even at the venue of the congress. He said, ‘no problem’ and that we should go ahead. On leaving that place, the state chairman of the party was excited and told me, ‘Senator, you and your team have saved the day if you and your team didn’t say what you said, we are not sure we will survive in Cross River because the environment was charged!’
When we got to the party office, everybody insisted that we must meet with the stakeholders and having a chairman of the electoral panel, who is a seasoned politician, he sent a text to the state chairman that we must meet with the stakeholders so that we can tell them what we’ve been told. In that caucus meeting, because when we got to the office, we had had a little caucus meeting, they told us they’ve short-listed some people that would contest and we told them that there’s no shortlisting as the mandate we got from the party was that everybody must be allowed to contest and that as far as we were concerned, we wanted to do transparent congresses and go home.
At that juncture, we left to tell the stakeholders that ‘if you bought your form in Abuja, you have the right to contest. If you bought your form in Calabar, you also have the right to contest. Immediately they heard that, the environment changed. Everybody was happy. We then asked the party about the arrangement put in place for the election and they replied that they’ve provided electoral officers for us and we were okay with that. We told them that since you are the party here, we will follow you and we followed them, distributed the electoral officers who went to work according to the posting of the state chapter of the party. We told them to go and work according to their own posting; not even us. At about 12 midnight, we had problems. When Calabar South (Cross River South senatorial district) results came in, they felt disturbed that, even though they sent their own people to conduct the elections, they lost. And the person who even brought the result was their returning officer.
They now called me and said: ‘Senator, where are you? The result of Calabar South is there.’ We took it and then, the state chairman came back to me and said: ‘please, look, what they had from the field was not the correct thing.’ I then asked him: ‘what do you mean by what you had not being the correct
thing?
This is the result and we will not tamper with it.’ At that juncture, they became jittery that some of their men they sent to the field, maybe, did not play according to instructions.
We said okay. Meanwhile, they now arranged for an office, that we should go to that office and that everything that comes, we will work with them. I told them pointblank that we are not working with you people. ‘Let your people return the result.’
We were with the executive members of the state chapter of the PDP till 5am on Sunday, November 2. As at 4:30am, they insisted that they wanted to photocopy the results. We went beyond our duty and agreed. We said ‘okay, go ahead and photocopy the result.’ At that juncture, even the state chairman was jittery with the result because he felt they didn’t do well.
As at 2:00pm, the National Assembly members, including the Senate Leader and members of the House of Representatives came to meet with us; to register their protests. They told us that they were uncomfortable with what they were hearing that was emanating from the office; that some of the results were being changed and so on.
We told them it was not so and that we needed to bring in the chairman to also listen to their complaints. Immediately the state chairman came in and saw the National Assembly members, he said he was not ready to listen to this nonsense.
We reminded him that these were also stakeholders in the congresses. He refused and insisted he was not ready to listen to any nonsense. He left.
Let me also point out that while all these was going on, the deputy governor was present. He came to greet the electoral panel chairman. Maybe when he left us, he scolded the chairman, I don’t know. But some hours after, the state chairman came to my hotel room and knelt down and said he was sorry for what transpired earlier. I told him to forget the matter; that it’s just politics but that the only person he should apologise to was the the chairman of the electoral panel because he’s 80+.

This was in the wee hours of the morning. At about 5:15 to 5:30am, since we’d made arrangements to get a plane to bring us back to Abuja, the secretary of the state chapter was also ready. He didn’t even tell us that he would go back to Abuja with us.”
In furtherance, Senator Emmanuel Anosike denied the allegation that any member of the panel was given N500 million bribe by a governorship candidate in the state to doctor the results of the exercise but instead, he told Governor Liyel Imoke to put his house in order and advise his supporters not to blackmail members of the panel that made sure that the exercise was transparent and devoid of influence and inducement from any quarter.

Super eagles of Nigeria attacked by congo fans (AFCON 2015)

Posted By: betadvicetips - 8:51 PM
After Nigeria's Aaron Samuel came on in the second half to increase the tally and also took the game beyond, the entire Stade Municipal arena became tensed up.
The Congolese threw caution into the winds with an attack launched on Super Eagles of Nigeria following their two nil lose to the African Champions in the AFCON 2015 qualifying tie.

The unruly action of the fans however made the center referee Grisha Ghead from Egypt, to stop the proceedings for about 10 minutes before resumed game. Security men shot tear gas canisters to disperse the worrying fans and restore sanity in the stadium. The Congolese action could attract sanctions from the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The Eagles also got an hostile reception on arrival in Congo with open intimidation by angry local fans who chanted 'Nigeria Ebola!' as the team made their way for a final training in Pointe Noire.

ASUU SAGA!!! Students Slam Shekarau Over ‘No More Strike’ Promise

Posted By: betadvicetips - 2:42 PM
many students have expressed mixed feelings, over the comment made by Nigeria's Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, in Lagos last week that his ministry is working towards making sure Nigerian universities don't embark on unnecessary strike again.
Orekoya Babatunde a 400 level undergraduate student of the University of lagos expresses anger readiness to hold the minister to his words, over the statement made by the minister.

There's no reason to doubt what the minister wants us to believe but I know time will surely prove him wrong since this is not the first time they are selling
stuffs like this to us.
"Do you want to hear the truth?

His statement is political. Remember 2015 election is around the corner and they are ready to tell any kind of lie to corner some votes".
A 100 level student of university of lagos studying sociology, refused to take the minister's comment seriously. He said "I am disappointed with his statement. I don't know why they think they can continue deceiving us. Where was he when ASUU was on strike for close to one year?
"What magic do they want to perform now that will be different from what we are already used to?
Nothing good can ever come from our politicians and they are never tired of lying to us. "We know they want us to vote for President Goodluck Jonathan's second term which he badly needs now. We know where this promise is coming from and I know many of my undergraduate friends won't fall for this. "He has nothing to offer again because the standard of education in this country is falling by the day. Imagine students failing exams and all blames are on the students without mentioning the corrupt system. " Another student said: "One of the holy books said it is better to cut the part of our body that causes us to commit sin before it destroys the entire body. "I believe this is the time to cut off all wrong parts and save the educational body, making a better thing out of it. "Gbadamosi Adedayo says this is the season of endless lies. "A season when our politicians make lots of empty promises and when they get to power, they begin to tell us another story contrary to the ones told during electioneering campaign. Well, I'm not surprised because we are in a country being governed with lies," he said.
Adediran Bukunmi, a 200 level Biological Science student of Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU said that the statement from the minister is a good one if only he's sincere about it and not one of those political promises.
"You need not ask again. It's a very good one from the Malam, that is, if he can do it though. Well, strike is a total waste of time. I gained admission in 2011. I should be graduating next year but no thanks to the incessant strikes, I can't even graduate next year. "It's so annoying, but unfortunately there's little I can do about it. If the minister can make the unnecessary strikes stop, then we support him fully. On the other hand, the last thing I want is for lecturers to go on strike anytime soon. But at the same time the government should look into hike in school fees which I think will always lead to strike." Shekarau had promised that soon there would be no more strikes in the education sector in Lagos last week during the impact assessment tour of Federal Government-owned institutions in Nigeria.
He said the issue of strike affecting the Nigerian education, especially in the universities, would soon be a thing of the past as his ministry is doing all it could to stop it.

Must see!!! Suspected Phone Thief Nabbed In Akim (PHoto)

Posted By: betadvicetips - 8:58 PM

For Emem Moses (suspect name), suspected to have stolen a handset at 19 IBB Way, Calabar, early this evening, what befell him after he was caught in the act, is better imagined.

A #voiceofcalabar reporter who happened on the scene reports that, Moses had entered one of the shops almost opposite the Akim Police station and pilfered the phone, only to be immediately accosted by a few persons who saw him carry out the act.
While interrogating him, the young man in his 30s attempted an unsuccessful escape which somewhat drew a crowd to the scene. As attempts to get a clear picture of the suspected theft continued, it became clear as question after question was thrown at Moses, that he may have committed the crime. A search on him proved the crowd right and may have been the cue for the barrage of attacks on the victim that followed.

When the #voiceofcalabar reporter left the scene, policemen from the Akim division were effecting the arrest of the suspect, bloodied by the mob attack.

Posted By: betadvicetips - 8:10 PM
CALABAR- HUNDREDS of protesting youths on Wednesday morning besieged the People's Democratic party, PDP, secretariat along Mortala Mohammed Highway in Calabar, the Cross River State capital demanding for the dissolution of the state party executive committee.
The youths who bore various placard pillorying the party executive committee said the attempt by the leaders of the party to change the names of ward delegates elected on the 1st of November 2014 has made them to lose the confidence of the party members and accordingly demanded that they should be relieved of their positions.
