INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), in Cross River State, Dr Sylvester Okey Ezeani says they have started the distribution of non-sensitive election materials in the state, howthat, as at yesterday, Tuesday, nine (9) Local Governments have already received.
Dr Ezeani made this known in the early hours of yesterday when he entertained a team of journalist in his office.
According to him, the non-sensitive materials including ballot boxes are being distributed this early in the state to overcome lapses as witnessed in previous elections where materials arrive late; “We have started distributing non-sensitive materials to the local government areas. As I speak, we have sent those materials to about nine local government areas. As you know, the terrain of the state is such that we need to start the distribution early to avoid lapses.”
The Local Governments where the materials are already served are Calabar Municipality, Calabar South, Akpabuyo, Bakassi Akamkpa, Biase, Yakurr, Abi and Obubra.
Speaking on his preparation for next week’s exercise, Dr Ezeani said his office has received about 3,057 card readers which have been upgraded and configured to ensure that the commission does not have any reason to fail.
He begged Cross Riverians who are yet to collect their voter’s cards to please collect them; saying that they are still over 200,000 uncollected cards in his possession.
The REC also commented on the current business of vote’s cards wholeselling and retailing in the state: “You are only disenfranchising people by buying their PVCs, because you cannot use them for anything. It is worthless and a waste of money. I advise people to stop selling their PVCs because nothing can be done to circumvent this process,” he said.
